John Soulsby – Local Food Hero

September 21st, 2010

John Soulsby has been gardening for 40 years and is recognised as one of the leading gardeners in the North East of England. His knowledge covers all aspects of horticulture, including exhibition growing where he has won many local shows and several national shows, also holding a world record for growing the heaviest leek, which weighed in at 18lbs 5oz!  This year he supplied us with some of his prize winning leeks which can be seen growing in the courtyard at our restaurant.

One of John’s passions is to grow tomatoes the old-fashioned way – in soil as opposed to being mass-produced in grow bags – and our special dinner back in August was a true celebration of the last English tomatoes of summer.  Guests enjoyed a 4 course menu, each dish showcasing the tomato in a different way.  Watch this space for future events using John’s exceptional produce.

‘BYO’ to Bistro 21

September 17th, 2010

The first Tuesday of every month gives the opportunity to ‘bring your own’ wine with you to enjoy with dinner.  The idea is that you root around under the stairs for that bottle that was given to you as a secret Santa, or the wine that you have been saving for a special occasion which has somehow never come, or which you thought was too expensive to drink at home – and you bring it with you to Bistro 21.  We won’t charge you any corkage; just remember to chill anything that needs it beforehand!
